Not one, not two but three planning consents grant

Not one, not two but three planning consents granted!

August was a busy month, seeing consent granted for 3 recent projects. Each with their own unique tree challenges. Take a look at our case studies for more background.

It was also a month where BNG guidelines were updated to include <0.2 hectare developments, provided they don't affect priority habitats. It's worth checking the latest GOV.Uk update to make sure any planned works fall into the correct exemption category.

They say that planning consents are like buses….. over the last few months we were delighted to hear that consent was granted for 3 recent projects. Each with their own unique tree related challenges.

🌳Renovation project at Oxford Botanic Gardens
Tree Frontiers were invited to tender for a project at the Oxford Botanic Gardens, where plans were being developed to replace several ageing glasshouses.

We identified an ancient tree within the site boundary, which would have a direct implication on the proposed plans. Working collaboratively, the design utilised existing building footprints and ensured that the rooting environment and buffer zone had minimal encroachment.

🏠Outbuilding conversion in the White Horse district
Oxford Architects client had a vision to convert an existing outbuilding into an annex, involving adding a single storey extension and a rear two storey gable.

Based on the tree survey and design input, we identified one tree for removal, set out a replacement planting schedule, and detailed protection measures for surrounding trees affected by the works.

Planning was approved with adherence to the Tree Removal and Protection Plan secured as a planning condition.

🌲New dwelling in Stratford-upon-Avon
We were approached by Studio Spicer Architects for fresh arboricultural insight to help shape a revised layout, following an earlier refusal.

Based on the results of the tree survey, we were able to work with the design team to minimise tree loss (ensuring an offsite veteran tree was protected) and provide recommendations for the necessary protection measures.

We also helped our client navigate the provision of a Tree Preservation Order (TPO) during the design process without jeopardising the site design.

Our report, plans and draft Arboricultural Method Statement were submitted to Stratford-on-Avon District Council, and planning permission was granted in March this year.

Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) guidance sets out which developments are exempt from mandatory BNG requirements.

This includes small or householder applications, temporary works, self‑build and custom‑build projects, de minimis impacts, and, starting this month, developments on sites of 0.2 hectares or below, provided they do not affect priority habitats.

It’s worth checking the latest GOV.UK update to ensure any planned works fall within the correct exemption category.

Project Highlight: Oxford Botanic Garden

Our latest case study shares our work with @oxford_uni with a renovation to six ageing glasshouses at the historic @oxfordbga .

During our survey, we identified a 300 year old black walnut whose protected root zone extended into the proposed works.

Working with architects, drainage engineers and planning consultants, we developed a design approach that protected the ancient tree. This is a great example of how evidence-based arboriculture and collaboration can protect heritage trees, allowing planned development to continue.
